August Sander: Facets of a Body of Work – Landscape. Architecture. Portrait.
With the three-part exhibition cycle August Sander: Architecture. Landscape. Portrait. Facets of a Body of Work, we are celebrating two major anniversaries. First, the photographer would have turned 150 on November 17 of this year. Second, next year marks the 100th anniversary of the solo exhibition at the Kölnischer Kunstverein in 1927, where he first presented the fundamental outlines of his epoch-defining project People of the 20th Century.
These landscape photographs serve as the starting point for our exhibition series, which aims to broaden the perspective on the photographer’s entire oeuvre. The landscape works will be followed early next year by his architectural photographs, and then, in spring 2027, concurrently with the major Sander exhibition at Cologne’s Museum Ludwig, selections from his portrait work will be presented, including his most celebrated images as well as rarely seen works.
