From 1956 onwards, Vivian Maier lived in Chicago, where she worked as a nanny for four decades. Her extensive photographic documentation of everyday life in the city later earned her the posthumous nickname ‘the nanny with a camera’. Featuring more than 150 photographs, the exhibition Vivian Maier. Close-up explores recurring themes and motifs in the photographer’s work: childhood, her numerous self-portraits, colour photography, which she increasingly embraced from the 1970s onwards, and her celebrated street photography, in which she captured urban life as a quiet observer.
