The opening of the Louvre in 1793 preceded the birth of photography by several decades. Blending reality and imagination, the museum became a major source of inspiration for early photographers. This unprecedented exhibition explores the Louvre as a model, subject, source of inspiration, and object of diversion. Bringing together more than 300 photographs taken within the museum, it showcases its artworks, galleries, open spaces, visitors, staff, hidden corners, and behind-the-scenes areas. Louvre Photo invites visitors to discover the museum from fresh perspectives, sometimes marked by humor or irony, and to reflect on the institution and its collections in new ways. This exhibition is endorsed by the Bicentenary of Photography by the Ministry of Culture and is part of the official programming for the Bicentenary.
