Produced in collaboration with Les Rencontres d’Arles, PHOTOROMANCE is the first monographic exhibition in France dedicated to Ivorian photographer Paul Kodjo (1939-2021). A major figure in Côte d’Ivoire’s post-independence cultural scene, Kodjo explored the relationship between image and storytelling through documentary photography and the photoroman (photo-novel). The exhibition traces his journey from Paris to Abidjan, where he founded the MAMEDIS photography, film, and publishing agency in 1970. Through fiction and documentary imagery, Kodjo documented a society undergoing profound cultural transformation and emancipation, creating a distinctive visual narrative of Côte d’Ivoire in the 1970s.
