With photographs ranging from the early 20th century to the present, Queer Constellations considers how the medium has been used to portray queer life, identity, and sexuality in the United States through the lens of the experience of the makers. It features works by contemporary photographers including Lola Flash, Catherine Opie, Paul Mpagi Sepuya, Shikeith, and Wolfgang Tillmans alongside photographers of previous generations, such as Rotimi Fani-Kayode, Peter Hujar, George Platt Lynes, and Robert Mapplethorpe. The exhibition borrows its title from Andrea Geyer’s Constellation series, where the artist transforms archival images of women by enlarging and collaging them to create kaleidoscopic photographs about historical memory and visibility.
