Alexander Apóstol examines the relationship between art and political power in Latin America through photographs, videos, and installations. Created in Caracas in 2017, Regime: Dramatis Personae comprises black-and-white portraits of archetypal figures associated with populist and authoritarian governments. LGBTQ+ activists modeled roles selected from the artist’s proposed cast of characters. Rather than portraying named individuals, the photographs explore the social functions, gestures, and identities produced under autocratic regimes.
