Marking the bicentenary of the invention of photography, this exhibition presents, for the first time, the photographic work of Jeanne Smith (1857–1943), sister of Madeleine Smith and one of the three donors whose bequests led to the creation of the Fondation des Artistes.
Despite her widely recognized technical expertise, Jeanne Smith’s photography remained largely overlooked. The exhibition brings together a selection of photographs made from 1883 onward. The first section focuses on landscape: Nogent Park, the streets of Paris, and journeys across Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. Her free compositions and varied approaches reveal a remarkably modern vision.
The exhibition also contributes to restoring the place of women artists long overlooked by art history.
