Prisoners – The Final Years of Saint-Lazare Prison (1919–1932)

The exhibition explores the final years of Saint-Lazare Prison, Paris’s only women’s prison until its closure in 1932. Through photographs, books, archives and objects, it examines the lives of the women imprisoned there and the different perspectives placed upon them, shedding light on the condition of women in 1920s Paris.

The exhibition takes place across two sites: Square Alban Satragne, where large-format photographs reveal the former prison in its urban setting, and the Françoise Sagan Media Library, housed in the prison’s former infirmary. The exhibition also highlights the traces left by the prisoners themselves, including writings, graffiti and imprints.
