Presented at the Petit Palais and later at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam (February 2027), this exhibition is the first major retrospective devoted to Eva Gonzalès (1847-1883). It aims to reintroduce an artist too often marginalized in art history by highlighting her unique contribution to modern painting and the figures who shaped and supported her career: her sister Jeanne Gonzalès, her husband Henri Guérard, and above all Édouard Manet, her mentor and artistic ally. The exhibition also places Gonzalès’s work in dialogue with that of contemporaries Berthe Morisot, Mary Cassatt, and Marie Bracquemond, offering fresh perspectives on the experiences of women artists in the nineteenth century. Through these comparisons, visitors gain deeper insight into their artistic paths, working conditions, chosen subjects, and critical reception. Organized in collaboration with the Van Gogh Museum and with exceptional support from the Musée d’Orsay.
