Martine Barrat – Soul of the City (L'Âme de la ville)

A multidisciplinary artist, Martine Barrat developed her work outside traditional photography circuits, focusing on New York and its marginalized neighborhoods. After moving to New York in 1968, she documented communities in the Lower East Side, Harlem, and the South Bronx, including the Roman Kings and the Ghetto Brothers. Her photographs, films, and videos are characterized by a participatory approach and close relationships with her subjects. Never moralizing, Barrat portrays everyday life, resilience, love, and human connections with respect and dedication. The exhibition presents decades of work celebrating life and community in neighborhoods often overlooked by mainstream narratives.
