Sayuri Ichida and Tomasz Laczny on Playing the piano upstairs
the(M) éditions
Published on the occasion of Paris Photo 2026, “Playing the Piano Upstairs” (the(M) éditions / IBASHO) explores photographer Sayuri Ichida’s relationship with her sister Phoka through childhood memories in Japan and the loss of their mother. Combining portraits and snow-covered landscapes, the book traces the changing distance and closeness between the two sisters. Designed by artist and graphic designer Tomasz Laczny, the publication brings together different printing techniques, including photopolymer photogravure on Japanese paper, hand-printed by the artist.
