Since 2006, Zanele Muholi has been documenting Black lesbian and bisexual women, queer, trans, non-binary, and gender-fluid people in South Africa and beyond through the ongoing series Faces and Phases. Published to mark the project’s twentieth anniversary, this volume brings together more than three hundred largely unpublished photographs made across multiple countries. Accompanied by testimonies, interviews, and texts, the photographs form a living archive that seeks to address the invisibility of Black LGBTQIA+ communities and foreground stories of identity, resilience, and self-representation.
