Revolution Under Construction: The SAAL Housing Process, 1974–76

Studio E, Ground Floor, Emperor House, Dragonfly Place

Revolution Under Construction recounts the story of the SAAL (Mobile Local Support Service), a participatory housing initiative launched during Portugal’s revolutionary period after 1974. Created to address widespread inadequate housing, SAAL connected residents with architects, planners, engineers, and builders to design and construct new developments shaped by community needs. Drawing on interviews and testimonies from participants, Sara Almodovar Pereira reconstructs this chapter of architectural and social history through the voices of those involved in protests, meetings, and building sites, offering new perspectives on housing, participation, and collective action.
