Lange Nacht revisits a body of photographs made by Erasmus Schröter between 1980 and 1981 during his explorations of nightlife in the former GDR, primarily in Leipzig. Shot on infrared film using the “black flash method,” the images depict waiting figures, dancers, lovers, opera-goers, circus performers, and festival scenes. Blurred and dreamlike, the photographs evoke the atmosphere of a surreal theatre. Reconstructing and expanding upon Schröter’s rare 1982 publication Nachts, the book demonstrates how technical experimentation and documentary observation can create striking new visual worlds.
