Abigail Lucien: Blood of the Earth

Art Institute of Chicago
111 South Michigan Avenue
IL 60603 Chicago
United States

In Blood of the Earth, Haitian American artist Abigail Lucien explores the connections between iron, history, the material world and human relationships.

Essential to life and present both in our blood and our surroundings, iron becomes a material rich in social and narrative meaning. The exhibition presents new sculptures in an immersive installation inspired by a working metalworking studio, featuring a furnace, bellows, anvil and tools.

Through processes of heating, forging, welding and casting, Lucien explores ideas of adaptation, transformation and belonging.
