Kate Newby – I'M ASKING

New Zealand artist Kate Newby (b. 1979) has created a site-specific installation for the Museum Folkwang, occupying the transitional space between its original 1960 building and its 2010 extension. Drawing on modernist architecture, she works with glass and concrete, transforming them into fragile, responsive materials.

On two glass doors, Good Sound features hand-drawn lines and fingerprints fused into the surface, creating textures that change with light and movement. Outdoors, I’m Asking extends these linear forms into the concrete courtyard.

Newby’s intervention encourages close attention to light, texture, and traces, creating a subtle dialogue between the museum’s architecture and its surrounding spaces.
