Hujar: Contact offers an unprecedented look into the life, times, and creative evolution of master photographer Peter Hujar (1934–1987). The exhibition features more than 110 contact sheets and 20 enlargements from the Morgan’s Peter Hujar Collection, which includes over 5,700 contact sheets spanning the artist’s career. Hujar’s meticulous records make it possible to trace his artistic development from his years as a studio assistant through his work in fashion, music, advertising, and ultimately his mature period as an influential independent artist in New York’s East Village. The exhibition reveals his editing process, artistic decisions, and intimate approach to portraiture, offering insight into both a lifetime of work and the cultural communities he documented.
