Hidden Insights: Looking at the Backs of Portrait Miniatures

Hidden Insights: Looking at the Backs of Portrait Miniatures explores the often-overlooked backs of British portrait miniatures. Popular from the 16th to the 19th century, these intimate and portable luxury objects were exchanged as personal mementos or symbols of political allegiance. Their cases could be richly decorated with gold, silver, pearls, enamel, diamonds, colored glass or elaborate hairwork. The exhibition presents 13 miniatures spanning 230 years, revealing how their backs can provide valuable insights into their owners, makers and the craftsmanship of these treasured objects.
