Centre d'Art photographique

There are artworks that document the world, and others that dream it. Anita Conti’s work lies at the intersection of these two approaches.
An autodidactic oceanographer, journalist, writer, and photographer, she has developed throughout her life a unique practice that blends scientific observation, documentation through drawing and photography, a captain’s log, and sensitive writing, all nourished by direct and prolonged experience of the sea. As a witness to the 20th century, Anita Conti observes, photographs, and writes, always maintaining a posture of learning when faced with the environments she studies. Her photographs, taken under demanding conditions (ship movements, gusts of wind, battering waves…), bear the direct trace of the sea. The ocean remains ever-present—a constant horizon that inscribes bodies and gestures within its vast space.
This exhibition invites visitors to explore the poetry of her work through about thirty images that reveal her attentive and unique gaze on the sea and the worlds that inhabit it, both above and below the surface.
