The work Affected presents vintage prints from Renate Zeun's eponymous photo series, taken in 1983–1984. Affected by cancer, the artist focuses her camera on herself and her immediate surroundings. Created within a visual culture that had long resisted the circulation of images of aging, sick, or damaged bodies, the work insists on visibility at a time when such images were only just becoming permissible in the GDR.
