The exhibition presented at the Petit Palais, and later at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam in February 2027, is the first major monograph dedicated to the artist Eva Gonzalès (1847-1883).
The aim of this exhibition is to introduce the public to an artist who has too often been regarded as a secondary figure in art history, in resonance with the three personalities who helped establish her talent and bring her work to life: Jeanne Gonzalès, her sister; Henri Guérard, her husband; and above all Édouard Manet, the master she chose and who shared with her the ideas of innovative painting.
The exhibition also offers selected counterpoints through works by other painters of the era – Berthe Morisot, Mary Cassatt, Marie Bracquemond. These intersecting perspectives allow for a better understanding of the trajectories of these women, the conditions under which they worked, the subjects they embraced, and the context in which their works were received.
This exhibition is organized in collaboration with the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam and with the exceptional support of the Musée d’Orsay.
