Niki de Saint Phalle (1930−2002) and Jean Tinguely (1925−1991) were a couple united by unbreakable bonds and a vision of art as an act of rebellion. They left their mark on the first decades of the Centre Pompidou with spectacular creations such as Le Crocrodrome de Zig & Puce (1977) and the Stravinsky Fountain (1983). Pontus Hulten (1924–2006), the first director of the Musée National d'Art Moderne, gave unconditional support to the two artists, encouraging the acquisition of major works by institutions and organising retrospectives at the Centre Pompidou (Saint Phalle in 1980, Tinguely in 1988).
