Asymetria presents selected excerpts from French artist Benoît Fougeirol’s photo book ZUS (Zones urbaines sensibles, Edition X Artists’ Books, Los Angeles, 2017), devoted to the architecture of the peripheries of Paris. From the 1950s onwards, he incorporated found negatives and documents in his photographs, creating thus not only new works, but also a means of learning about and understanding history. Annulling the distinction between the archive and the gallery, the new archaeology of photography refers to contemporary materials, surrounding them with a commentage/montage of images and objects from the artist’s archive. In this case, serving as commentary for the photographs of Benoît Fougeirol will be Jerzy Lewczyński’s series of recently discovered 18 slides, Opening and Closing My Eyes.
