Maison Européenne de la Photographie, Paris
5/7, rue de Fourcy
75004 Paris
The MEP is proud to present the first solo exhibition in France by Tyler Mitchell, a leading figure of a new generation of American photographers. The exhibition explores his longstanding themes: self-determination and the extraordinary radiance of the everyday.
Mitchell’s work creates a dialogue between historical references and contemporary narratives, expanding visions of the Black experience, far removed from conventional stereotypes. Since rising to prominence in the fashion world, he has developed a sensitive yet powerful visual narrative that blends portraiture and landscape with a vision of utopia.
Though rooted in the past, Mitchell’s work also evokes imagined futures, new visual worlds where Black subjects are portrayed in their full humanity and diversity. Through intimate, luminous scenes of everyday life, he creates a space for free expression, where individuals live fully and proudly, unburdened by clichés. His work claims a right to imagination and celebrates a joyful, tender Black utopia. By placing beauty, care, and dignity at the center of his images, Mitchell transforms representation into an act of empowerment, a gesture that is at once political and poetic.
