The story of Robert Doisneau’s photos of Gentilly begins in this town on the outskirts of Paris where he was born and ends here some sixty years later. Doisneau was often described as a “photographer of the suburbs” or someone who was “in love with the suburbs”, however these reductive labels oversimplify his complex relationship with the area and Gentilly in particular.
From his first photos dating back to the 1940s to his very last images from the 1980s, Doisneau documented the far-reaching changes in this periurban working-class town.
