Musée départemental Albert-Kahn
1, rue des Abondances
92100 Boulogne-Billancourt
The exhibition offers a reinterpretation of the 1,100 autochrome photographs and 140 reels of film produced during one of the final Albert Kahn’s Archives de la Planète missions. Led by the highly unusual Catholic missionary Francis Aupiais and the photographer and cameraman Frédéric Gadmer, this mission took place in Dahomey (now Benin) from January to May 1930. Taking the form of a Franco-Beninese dialogue, the exhibition questions how non-European cultures were viewed in the context of colonial rule and the emergence of ethnography.
Bénin aller-retour showcases a variety of artefacts alongside historical images, providing a critical reinterpretation of this heritage through the works of contemporary African artists, some of whom created pieces specifically for this exhibition.
