This autumn, Écho 119 is proud to present a new exhibition featuring two emblematic figures of contemporary Japanese art: Nobuyoshi Araki and Toshio Saeki, entitled Araki/Saeki: L'héritage fantasma(éro)tique du shunga. The exhibition explores the legacy of Japanese erotic iconography - and in particular shunga (Japanese erotic prints from the Edo period (1603-1868)) - in the singular and playful approach to sex in their respective works. Their work, both playful and subversive, redefines the boundaries of erotic art, while paying homage to this ancient artistic tradition. Period prints will be presented alongside photographs and illustrations to recontextualise their work and explore the universe and fantasies developed by these artists in the light of this major historical Japanese influence.
