POLARAKI reveals the great Japanese photographer's exploration of the infinite possibilities offered by the Polaroid, a central source of experimentation in his work. Created between 1997 and 2024, the works presented in the exhibition were acquired by collector Stéphane André, who donated them to the Guimet in 2025.
The exhibition pays tribute to Araki's frenetic use of the Polaroid, a daily gesture serving a scopic and erotic impulse, fuelling a form of diary around which his entire body of work revolves. It also evokes the appropriation by a private collector of an artist's work in a form reminiscent of cabinets of curiosities.
