Terada's photographs range from straightforward photography to staged works. For example, in "Buying Cake Home for an Imaginary Wife and Daughter," in which Terada plays the role of an imaginary father, experiencing a family gathering while absent, the work is a critical work that layers sexual and social norms, sexuality, and masculinity that are determined and internalized by one's gender at birth, as well as queer sexualities and ways of life that are excluded from these. Through the medium of photography, Terada appears to be attempting to highlight the structures and histories that have been made invisible in society, as well as the figures and voices of invisible others.
