In 1951, while actively participating in the Democrat Artists Association—founded by Ei-Q and other avant-garde artists—Iwamiya Takeji began photographing Katachi (Form) and the city of Kyoto. After a period of recovery from tuberculosis, he established Iwamiya Photos in 1955. As his career in commercial photography flourished, Iwamiya remained deeply committed to the Katachi series, a personal project that spanned eight years. What began as an exploration of the "roots" of ancient architecture gradually evolved: from architectural forms to the aesthetics of traditional performing arts, and ultimately to the beauty found in everyday objects. This exhibition invites viewers to trace Iwamiya's artistic journey—one that captures the essence of Japanese form through a lens both meticulous and poetic.
