Le Bal presents a remarkable figure in the history of Japanese photography, little known in France: Yasuhiro Ishimoto (1921-2012). For the first time in Europe, the exhibition, organized in close collaboration with the Ishimoto Yasuhiro Photo Center at The Museum of Art, Kochi, in Japan, will gather 169 original prints including vintage. The exhibition will focus on the early decades of Ishimoto’s work, between Chicago and Japan. A key figure of the post-war period, Ishimoto was considered “visually bilingual” for his ability to combine the formal approach of the New Bauhaus with the essence of Japanese aesthetics, while maintaining a critical view on the social issues of his time.
