We Tell Ourselves Stories…In Order to Live addresses the limits of narrative, and the ways that stories (true and fabricated) inform relationships to memory and self, while also affecting/informing larger conversations around gender, race, and citizenship. The exhibition takes the first sentence of Joan Didion’s iconic anthology The White Album (1979) as a provocation that re-imagines fictive boundaries as points of entry for imagining more capacious identities and forms of expression.
