The exhibition Victory! The Manufacture of Heroes takes a look at the various phases that follow victory, from its celebration to its commemoration, its staging and its inscription in memories. Trophies, spoils, rewards and ceremonies are used to materialize and represent success, and even to make it part of our heritage. From Roman triumphs to parades on the Champs-Élysées, from royal banquets to award ceremonies, paying tribute to heroes is a ritual that has spanned the ages. So has preserving and passing on the memory of them. Stories, songs, representations, steles, monuments, decorations and even by-products ensure the posterity of victory, depending on the strategic, political or commercial stakes involved. There is no victor without a vanquished. Victory is the result of a confrontation between adversaries, followed by a distinction - not always obvious - between the winner and the loser. While defeat is associated with the notion of infamy, it can also be used as a means of conjuration, understanding or revenge. Certain failures can thus be constructive if lessons are learned from them, even becoming factors of cohesion or reform.
