From the avenues of Buenos Aires to the seaside district of Rio de Janeiro, the exhibition retraces Albert Kahn's business trip to Argentina and Brazil from August to October 1909, and takes visitors on a sensitive journey through the transition to color, with the first autochromes recorded of Brazil. A veritable visual archive, the collection from the trip to South America bears witness to urban modernization in the making.
The long little-known South American travel collection comprises 600 monochrome stereoscopic photographs, 61 autochrome plates and 3 minutes of film. The tour follows the chronology of the voyage, beginning aboard the liner König Friedrich August. Following this maritime introduction, visitors will discover, in a visual and audio stroll, astonishing portraits of South American cities in contrast to exotic clichés, as well as the first autochromes of the Bay of Rio, which mark the appearance of color. Finally, the exhibition unveils the investigative work carried out by the museum around this unprecedented collection, just before the return journey to the Spanish coast.
