The opening of the Louvre in 1793 preceded the birth of photography by a few decades. The museum, which blends reality and imagination and allows one to travel through time and space, became a rich source of inspiration for the early pioneers of photography. The concept of this unprecedented exhibition focuses on the Louvre as a model, as a subject, as a source of inspiration, and as an object of diversion. It will feature more than 300 photographs taken at the Louvre, depicting the museum itself, its artworks, its exhibition rooms, its open spaces, as well as its famous and anonymous visitors, its staff, its hidden corners, and behind-the-scenes areas. Louvre Photo invites discovery and revelation, encouraging viewers to adopt fresh, detached perspectives—sometimes with humor or a touch of irony—regarding the museum, the institution, and its collections. This exhibition is endorsed by the Bicentenary of Photography by the Ministry of Culture and is part of the official programming for the Bicentenary.
