The "heart in the eyes". The poet Philippe Soupault's phrase seems to sum up Léon Herschtritt's humanist photographic work. A post-war photographer, his itinerary followed that of a generation of "reporters-illustrators", stimulated by a flourishing press and dynamic commissions from government agencies.
From the Algerian War to the construction of the Berlin Wall, from Africa to President Charles de Gaulle's regional visits, Herschtritt's work takes us through the first two decades of the Fifth Republic, between decolonization and the Cold War.
Focusing on the period 1958-1970, the exhibition presents exceptional prints and previously unpublished contact sheets, revealing the career of a true photographic talent, acclaimed during his lifetime by the profession as a whole, of which he was the most gentle spokesman.
