Galerie Thomas Zander is pleased to present an exhibition of recent large-scale photographs and, for the first time, also drawings by Jürgen Klauke. Klauke is considered a pioneer of conceptually staged photographic art since the early 1970s, which he continues to shape through strategies of performance and body art until today. He often puts his body at the center of his formally composed tableaus and sequences, using it as a subject and vessel to test the boundaries between life and art, to challenge conventional social roles and gender identities. Jürgen Klauke’s intermedia approach to art does not emphasize the moment of integration, but rather that of friction, of being caught in the middle, and represents a singluar position in contemporary art. Klauke participated in documenta 6 and 8 as early as 1977 and 1987, his work was included in Harald Szeemann's special exhibition Aperto 80 at the Venice Biennale in 1980 and he is recognized as one of the most important contemporary artists in Germany today.
