Recognized in his lifetime, close to chagall, kafka, and Suzanne Valadon, Georges Kars (1880–1945) was nevertheless erased from art history. Through more than 150 works, drawings, and archival documents, the Museum of Art and History of Judaism (MAHJ) presents the first French retrospective dedicated to this great painter of the École de Paris. Forty years after his last exhibition in France in 1983 at the Museum of Modern Art in Troyes, Georges Kars finally reclaims his rightful place. In partnership with the National Gallery in Prague and about fifteen Czech institutions, the exhibition "Georges Kars: A Bohemian in Paris" will bring together more than 150 paintings, drawings, sketchbooks, and archival documents at the MAHJ starting on October 15. The event will retrace the journey of a cosmopolitan artist whose work accompanied the major artistic revolutions of the early 20th century, before being brutally interrupted by war and the rise of Nazism.
