In the early days of Brazilian photography, in the latter half of the 20th century, one name in particular stands out: that of George Love. A charismatic figure, Love has always been shrouded in an aura of mystery that has become legendary. Despite his renown, he succeeded in remaining an enigma, concealing as much as he revealed.
In an era of intellectual ferment, questioning of traditional behaviors and evolving customs, George Love’s brilliance was evident in everything he turned his hand to—in his professional dealings, as well as in his personal relationships. His contributions to the arts, publishing, and business broadened the scope of photography, forging new paths with an avant-garde work that was years ahead of its time. Consciously or not, generations of Brazilian photographers have found inspiration in his work, which has provided one of the principal wellsprings for the culture of our contemporary age.
