“An invitation from a stranger to photograph in Rome transformed my work. Although I was continuing the same project that has consumed me for the past thirteen years – observer life through windows – the historical architecture of Italy and the spirit of the past in the present left an indelible impression on the images. Captivated by the generations of stories within these buildings and the countless romances inspired on these streets, I was compelled to dig deeper into the worlds behind the stucco and stone. The architecture frames the narratives of everyday life of Italian city-dwellers – each window scene made grand when set against the piazzas, churches and monuments. In this new chapter of my work, the intimacies of home reflect the pleasures of the place – Italy’s magical light, the pace of spring, the chatter in the streets below. What other imagined stories these images contain may be revealed by looking very closely, or rather, by letting the unseen come to life in the contemplative state of mind that naturally arises when gazing out a window.” Gail Albert Halaban
