Carried out between 1859 and 1869, construction of the canal across the Suez isthmus to connect the Mediterranean to the Red Sea crystallised numerous challenges specific to the 19th century, technological, commercial, financial, diplomatic and geopolitical alike. This display will present a rare album of photographs taken by Louis Cuvier in 1866 and 1867, which form an essential reportage on that extreme worksite, one of the century’s most secret and closely monitored undertakings.
