The Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris is giving carte blanche to artist Ari Marcopoulos, a photographer and filmmaker emblematic of the New York underground and a leading figure in the world of skateboarding.
For the first time at the Museum, his work Brown Bag is presented in a special installation. In the same way that he looks at his subjects from both an insider's and an anthropologist's perspective, Ari Marcopoulos also offers a new reading of certain works in the MAM collections, through the prism of the counter-cultures with which he is so familiar. Ari Marcopoulos's portraits come into dialogue with artists such as Hans Bellmer, Brassaï, Giorgio de Chirico, César, Isa Genzken, Annette Messager, Bruce Nauman, Daniel Turner and Christopher Wool. Through some forty works, the exhibition deals with movement, the body and architecture, themes dear to the urban cultures in which Ari Marcopoulos has been interested since the beginning of his career.
