From October 2023 to February 2024, LE BAL will present a collective exhibition dedicated to the perspective that artists have on their mothers. The selected body of works, spanning from the 1960s to the present day, features work by 26 artists including Sophie Calle, Christian Boltanski, Michel Journiac, Anri Sala and Lebohang Kganye. Beyond the testimony of an inevitably unique intimate relationship, these works are constructed through formal and conceptual mechanisms that involve the body, the figure, or the character of the mother in the creative process. Whether seeking to embody the reality of presence or the effects of absence, they all have in common to consider filiation as a way to rethink archetypal relationships, encompassing social criticism, quest for self, conjuration and appeasement.
