Walker Evans (1903-1975) is one of the most important American photographers of the 20th century. The Centre Pompidou is now presenting the first major museum retrospective of his work in France. Through his attention to the details of everyday life and urban banality, he largely helped to define the visibility of 20th-century American culture. Some of his photographs have become icons in this respect.
The retrospective looks back at the artist's entire career, from his first photographs of the late Twenties to the Polaroids of the Seventies, throughmore than 300 vintage prints from leading international collections, and a hundred-odd documents and objects.
