Barbara: the ‘longue dame brune', her narrow face and aquiline nose, polished lyrics dripping with melancholy – this is the frosted glass figure that many retain. But this exhibition offers us the chance to peek behind the curtain. It tells the story of a little Jewish girl who survived a rough childhood and decided that performing arts would be her life and the theatre, her daily backdrop.
Her voice and inimitable timbre take the visitor through the exhibition. Manuscripts, letters, drawings and countless unpublished items open a door to Barbara's private side, intimate and driven. With a wealth of videos and photographs, the exhibition exposes an artist who carved out her own path without ever betraying or repeating herself: the path of a free woman.
