Gilles Peyroulet & Cie presents A short and incomplete history of the column by Elizabeth Lennard
"The first columns I photographed were at the Palace of the Legion of Honor in San Francisco in 1972. Then when I crossed paths with the remains of the Temple of Delos in Greece, I was captivated by the ruins of antiquity.
I gradually became aware that I was following in the footsteps of travelers of the past like Goethe, Tocqueville or Berenson. And that I was -in my own way and backwards- doing the “Grand Tour”, as the English travelers called this journey of initiation, birth certificate of Romanticism. My own voyage started out in America with the ruins of a building in Harlem, a bank in Brooklyn, a movie theater in Manhattan and on to Europe: a mental hospital in Paris and to Asia- the façade of sex shop in Tokyo. I noticed columns everywhere."
